Saturday Sampler February Block - Star Dahlia

Our second "Secret Garden" block is Star Dahlia.

Dear Saturday Sampler Participants,

I want to send out a huge thank you to one of our quilters who alerted us to a very important issue about using red fabric. As you know, we are using a beautiful collection of fabric from RJR Fabrics, Roses de Noel by Robin Pandolph. In your blocks (and in block one) we use a deep red fabric that should come with a word of caution. This red fabric needs to be set. Here's what that means.

I have researched "how to set red color in fabric" and see the following recommendations from eHow, Anne Rose, Contributing Writer:

"The red color of some fabric must be set, or made permanent, to avoid bleeding of the dye color. Fabric manufacturers often use excess red dye to achieve a bright red color. Bleeding happens when unset dye leaves the fabric when placed in water."

Please read: http://www.ehow.com/how_5656339_set-red-color-fabric.html

After discussing this with Tina and shop staff, we are suggesting the following recommendations:

For the Saturday Sampler red fabrics from this collection, you will want to set the red color. Use a dye catcher (can be purchased at the grocery store) when washing pieced blocks, quilt tops or red fabric in general. Pre-soak the red fabric in water and vinegar according to recommendations by Anne Rose. Consider using a project like Retayne to set the red color.

None of us would want an unexpected result from using red fabrics in our quilts. Please use this word of caution when doing any piecing with red fabrics.

If you have experienced a problem, please contact us immeadiately and we will issue a new block kit. If you haven't pieced or washed your block (not everyone does) please heed our caution and set the red.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience with your block one. From here on out, we will let everyone know about how to set the red.

Thank you,

Susan
